Breeding for Profit

C.A.T.S. Position Statement on the Breeding of Pedigree and other Cats

C.A.T.S. Inc does not support the breeding of cats by business owners with a view to profit making for the following reasons:

  • Animals are not our chattels from which to make money. When used as a source of sole income, it opens the door to compromised welfare conditions for the sake of putting family food on the table. Animals under human care should never be under such pressure and compromise. They are sentient beings having the ability to suffer.
  • Breeder cats are born into a world of over population and a sale of a breeder cat takes away an opportunity for a shelter cat.
  • Breeder cats are often placed with little concern for their future welfare. Few breeders check the homes to which these cats are going for cleanliness, competitor animals, appropriate environment for the temperament of the particular cats, numbers and attitudes of children and of course attitudes of the adults. Neither can this be effectively policed.
  • Breeder cats are often not placed in pairs, so all family connection is lost and there is a possibility of lack of daytime companionship.
  • Unwanted runts of the litter can end up on the streets adding to the unowned population and so become subject to abuse or else be given to people in questionable industries such as the greyhound racers who use them as live bait to “blood “ their dogs or end up in laboratories where they are experimented on without pain relief. None of this can be prevented or policed.

C.A.T.S. Inc support a Moratorium of all cat breeding for profit with a review when Shelter numbers have reached zero euthanasia.
CA.T.S. Inc encourages a selfless view in animal ownership and a concern for the animal over that of the self.
